With player safety of maximum importance in all levels of soccer throughout the world, the shin guard has now become a necessity if you plan on playing soccer competitively.
We'll investigate the materials used, the differences in shin guard for each position and what kind of protection you can expect to receive from your shin guards.
Why do we need to wear shin guards?
Maybe you've seen old footage from bygone years where the players of the time wore heavy leather boots, took real hard tackles in their stride and headed a heavy leather ball that absorbed water and weighed twice as much at the end of the game as at the beginning? These soccer players were real men and didn't need shin guards so why do you?
The simple answer is that if you don't fancy a range of serious leg injuries then shin guards are both your best friend and your most loyal protector.
What are modern shin guards made of?
Modern shin guards are comprised of a range of synthetic materials including:
Fiberglass - Lightweight but stiff and sturdy which offers strong protection to the shin.
Foam rubber - Also lightweight and able to be molded but offers less protection than fiberglass.
Polyurethane – It’s heavier and sturdier which offers almost total protection from most impacts.
Plastic - Less expensive but less protection offered as well.
EVA foam backing - comfortable backing for most modern shin guards
Do different positions need different types of shin guard?
Goalkeepers will require the least obtrusive shin guards as they are involved in minimal standard tackling.
Defenders should wear a maximum sized pair of shin guards to protect them from regular impacts and tackles.
Midfielders should also look for adequate protection as they will again be competing more often for the ball.
Forwards should wear more lightweight but hard shin guards to enable them to move more freely but still ensure adequate shin protection.
How do I measure my size for shin guards?
The best way to measure your leg for shin guards is to take the length of your leg from ankle to knee and take off 2 inches from the knee and 2 inches from the ankle. The shin guards should offer enough protection to make your legs secure without obstructing your movement at all.
Most adult shin guards come in standard sizes so it is always a good practice to try a few pairs on and see how they feel when you walk about in them.
